How Starting a Franchise is Like Getting a Puppy

May 26, 2025

Starting a new franchise is one of the most rewarding yet challenging endeavors an aspiring entrepreneur can undertake. Over the years, I’ve answered countless questions about the journey—“What should I expect during the first year?” “How tough is it to get the business started?” and “How long before owning this business becomes less work and more reward?” This past year, an unexpected comparison emerged that encapsulates the new franchise experience in a relatable way: raising a puppy.

The Commitment

When you bring a new dog home, you’re committing significantly. Sir Wellington—Wells, for short—became a living, breathing bundle of joy and chaos in my home, demanding constant attention and care. Similarly, buying a franchise is a substantial investment, tying a piece of your future to the success of a business. It’s a long-term responsibility and privilege, much like adopting a puppy, requiring dedication and commitment.

The First 12-18 Months: The Toughest Yet Most Rewarding

Raising Wells during the first year was a test of patience and perseverance. The effort was immense, from house-training and crate-training to nudging him out of my favorite chair countless times. However, the rewards were equally significant as Wells matured into a well-behaved dog. The initial 12-18 months of owning a franchise are analogous. The learning curve is steep, and the work can be intense, but the effort invested during this period is crucial for long-term success. Just like with a puppy, the challenges faced early on lead to smoother operations and greater rewards down the line.

Structure is Key

One of the most critical lessons in puppy training is establishing a routine. Predictability and structure make for happy puppies and harmonious households. The same principle applies to franchising. A significant advantage of buying into a franchise is the pre-established processes and routines provided by the franchisor. By adhering to these structures, franchisees can ensure their businesses run smoothly and efficiently, like how a consistent routine helps a puppy adapt and thrive.

Expect Mistakes

The journey with Wells wasn’t without its mishaps, like the occasional accident in the house. Mistakes are inevitable, whether in puppy training or starting a franchise. What matters is how these mistakes are handled. Cleaning up, refocusing efforts, and learning from these missteps are crucial steps toward building a successful and profitable business. Perfection is unattainable, but persistence and resilience in the face of challenges are what lead to long-term success.

It’s a Partnership

Raising a puppy is a family endeavor, requiring everyone’s involvement and cooperation. Similarly, starting a franchise is a partnership that often extends beyond the individual to include family members. The demands of the business, particularly in the first year, can impact the entire family, necessitating patience and support from everyone involved. Over time, as the business stabilizes, the workload lightens, and the rewards become evident, benefiting all who contributed to its success.

Embracing the Journey

Whether welcoming a new pet or embarking on a new business venture, patience, perseverance, and a sense of humor are essential. Both journeys offer unique challenges and rewards, ultimately leading to a fulfilling and profitable partnership.
