Create Your Own Certainty

Why Your Next Career Move Should Be One You Finally Control

Take a look at the landscape in 2026. Between shifting geopolitical instability, the rapid acceleration of AI, and the constant hum of corporate “restructuring,” the world feels more volatile than ever.

If you’re sitting in a high-level corporate seat, you likely feel it, too.

On the surface, things might look stable. Your P&L is healthy and your team is performing. But in the back of your mind, there’s a lingering question:

How much of my future is actually in my control?

Most executives respond to this unease by doubling down: working harder, staying more visible, and hoping that their performance will act as a shield against the next global or economic contraction.

However, true security isn’t found by reacting to the environment, but rather by strategically positioning yourself within a system where you hold the keys.

The Myth of the “Secure” Executive

I spent nearly 20 years in the corporate world with companies like Ford Motor Company and Terex. I lived through the cycles of growth and the inevitable contractions. I was a top performer leading a $5 billion sales and marketing organization, and I felt I had reached a level of professional “untouchability.”

That changed in a single afternoon in late December 2006.

I was pulled out of a staff meeting by a call from my boss, who proceeded to offer me a voluntary separation package. It was a wake-up call that forced a complete shift in how I viewed security:

Performance does not equal protection.

At that moment, I realized that I was still operating in a system where the most critical decisions about my life were made in rooms I wasn’t in. I had plenty of responsibility, but zero control.

That was the day I decided to stop renting my future from an employer and start building one I actually owned.

Reimagining the “Golden Handshake”

Most people treat a severance package as a bridge, or a temporary safety net to hold them over until they find the next corporate role. But when I went home to talk it over with my wife, we decided to view it differently.

A separation package isn’t just compensation; it can be seed capital.

It’s the “golden handshake” that allows you to reset your life. Instead of using those dollars to fund a job search for another role you don’t control, you can redeploy that capital to:

  • Start a franchise: Providing the initial investment needed to secure a proven model.
  • Create a lifestyle runway: Covering your mortgage and family expenses so you can launch your business without the immediate pressure of “making rent.”
  • Buy back your time: Giving you the window to move from reaction to decision.

When you use your severance to invest in yourself, you trigger a power shift. You take the control away from the corporation and put it back in your own hands.

Control: The Only Real Form of Certainty

We often mistake “predictability” for “certainty.” In the corporate world, you can predict your paycheck only until the day the strategy shifts at headquarters.

True certainty is a mindset shift. It’s moving from a defensive posture—reacting to layoffs and market swings—to an offensive one.

When you own a franchise, you aren’t guessing. You are leveraging a proven model, a structured system, and predictable demand. Instead of waiting to see what the “environment” decides for you, you are the one deciding which markets to enter and how to scale your growth.

Entrepreneurship is often framed as “risky,” but the greatest risk is leaving your income and your family’s future in the hands of a board of directors you’ve never met.

Real certainty comes from knowing that your efforts are compound interests in your own equity rather than someone else’s.

Insulation Through Essential Businesses

When I left corporate, I didn’t look for the flashiest or trendiest business. I bought a Junk King franchise. It wasn’t “sexy,” but it was essential.

I realized that regardless of what happens with the stock market or the latest political cycle, homes need to be cleared, properties need maintenance, and basic human needs must be met. Certainty is found where needs are required.

If you are looking to build a wall of certainty around your future, look toward industries that AI can’t touch and economic swings can’t break:

  • Restoration & HVAC: When a pipe bursts or the heat fails, it isn’t a “luxury” purchase; it’s a non-negotiable repair.
  • Senior Care: With 10,000 Americans turning 65 every single day, the demand for senior care isn’t just a trend; it’s a demographic reality that isn’t slowing down. Families will always prioritize the care of their loved ones.
  • Property Maintenance: Essential B2B and residential services focus on infrastructure and upkeep, ensuring a baseline of consistent, repeatable revenue.

Positioning for the Next Cycle

The question isn’t whether the world will stay uncertain. We know it won’t. The question is:

Where will you be positioned when the next shift happens?

Franchising allows you to invest in an established infrastructure, moving you directly into a high-level oversight role. It lets you skip the structural guesswork of a new venture and use your executive experience to lead a business that you actually own.
